ADIRONDACK 56, LITTLE FALLS 52
LITTLE FALLS, N.Y. — The Adirondack Wildcats broke a tie midway through the fourth quarter and defeated Little Falls 56-52 Monday to continue an early season trend for the Mounties.
Little Falls (0-4, 0-3 CSC-I) has been tied or has led in the fourth quarter of each game this season but has yet to win.
“We come back,” Little Falls coach Brian Dunn said. “We do things right, we do the things we’re supposed to do. Then we get a lead and we start playing not to lose. We get away from what was working.”
Brandon Mosher’s three-pointer from the top of the key pulled Little Falls even at 47 with 4:59 left in the game. Following one empty possession for each team, Adirondack ran a long pass on an inbounding play and Matt Sprowell beat the Mounties down the court for the go-ahead layup. A jump ball on Little Falls’ ensuing possession gave possession back to Adirondack and Denver Divens hit two free throws at the other end of the floor. Andre Adkins followed with a second-chance basket to put the Wildcats up 53-47 with 3:04 to play.
Bryce Salamone snapped a three-minute scoreless drought for Little falls with a steal and a layup. Defensively, the Mounties resorted to fouling to stop the clock, a tactic that proved effective as Adirondack missed a series of crucial free throws. Mike Conley hit one foul shot for a 54-49 lead but missed his second. The Wildcats, who had made nine of their first 12 free throws, then missed the front ends of back-to-back one-and-ones but the Mounties were unable to capitalize by scoring at their end of the floor.
Adkins made a layup in the closing seconds to clinch the victory and cap a 25-point individual performance. Salamone answered with a three-pointer to pull Little Falls back within four points but the Mounties would never regain possession after the basket with 4.1 seconds on the clock.
Adirondack led 10-4 in the first quarter but Little Falls fought back to take a 21-19 lead on a three-point shot by Alex Ewanyk in the second quarter. Adirondack led 27-26 at halftime following a pair of foul shots by Sprowell with 1.1 seconds on the clock. The lead changed hands six times in the third quarter before the Wildcats ended the period with a 6-0 run and took a 43-38 lead.
Ewanyk led Little Falls with 17 points. Salamone scored all eight of his points in the fourth quarter as he, Ewanyk and Mosher each hit two of Little Falls’ eight three-pointers. Brandon Terzi had six points and 11 rebounds and Salamone led Little Falls with four assists.
Adkins had eight rebounds to go with his 25 points for Adirondack (3-0, 2-0 CSC-I). Conley scored eight points and Divens scored all six of his in the fourth quarter.
Little Falls was a 69-31 winner in junior varsity play.
