WOMEN'S LACROSSE -

MONROE CC 11, HERKIMER COUNTY CC 3

HERKIMER, N.Y. — Sunday afternoon started out well for Herkimer County Community College’s Generals but finished even better for the Tribunes of Monroe Community College. Monroe won Region III’s women’s lacrosse championship with an 11-2 victory over Herkimer on the generals’ home field.

Jolene Quinta scored a pair of goals in the opening 10 minutes of play and gave Herkimer (8-4) a 2-0 lead against a team that had beaten the Generals twice previously this season.

Kristine Olijnyk and Amber French scored goals 12 seconds apart to tie the game in the middle of the first half and Dana Chubb netted the go-ahead tally 9:38 before halftime. The Tribunes would tack on two more goals to go up 5-2 before halftime then outscored the Herkimer 4-0 in the second half.

Chubb, the regional tournament’s most valuable player, scored three goals to go with Olijnyk’s five in the championship game.

Julie McAvoy, a tournament all-star, kept Herkimer in the game by making 26 saves one day after recording one in the Generals’ 14-3 semifinal victory over Broome Community College.

“It could have been worse,” first-year Herkimer coach Dianna Ste-Marie said. “Our defense played great and Julie made a lot of great saves.”

Monroe had beaten Herkimer 12-1 and 10-5 in the Generals’ first two games of the season.

“We were ready,” Ste-Marie said, “but when we got on the field it was like a deer in the headlights again.”

Morgan Achilles made six saves for Monroe Sunday.

Korrin Nash had six goals and two assists in Herkimer’s semifinal win Saturday. Melissa Brennan added two goals and two assists and Quinta scored a pair of goals.

Monroe advanced to the championship game with a 23-2 rout of Mercyhurst North East.

Herkimer will host nationals next year and will be a participant in the tournament along with Monroe and two Maryland schools.
