UTICA, N.Y. —
Ethiopia's Tilahun Regassa added his name to the list of Boilermaker champions with a dominating run through the streets of Utica to win Sunday's annual 15-kilometer road race.
Regassa broke away from the pack early and won by 32 seconds at the front of a field with 11,360 finishers. Kenya's Peter Cheruiyot Kirui, Shadrack Kosgei and Daniel Salel were separated by a few seconds behind Regassa's time of 43:01.
Mamitu Daska gave Ethiopia a sweep of top Boilermaker honors with her first-place finish in the women's division. Daska ran 22nd overall in 49:26, 18 seconds ahead of Kenya's Risper Gesabwa.
Regassa and Daska are the third men's and women's champions from Ethiopia. Tarafe Maregu and Ashu Rabo Kasim swept in 2008; Lelisa Desisa won the men's race in 2010 and Gete Wami was the 2006 women's champion.
Kane Seamon of Richfield Springs was once again the area’s top finisher, crossing the line 31st in 50:23; the 25-year-old finished 36th last year with a time that was six seconds faster. Seamon was the 13th American finisher Sunday.
Herkimer’s Erin Ludwig topped the area’s female finishers as the 88th woman and 709th runner overall across the finish line with a gun time of 1:07:24. Former Center State Conference cross country and track and field standout Allison Lasnicki of Canastota ran 121st overall and Mohawk Valley Community College runner Savannah Boucher of New Hartford was 298th.
Matthew Lack, a 20-year-old from New Zealand, was a first-time winner in the wheelchair race with five-time champion Krige Schabort not in the field to defend his crown. Utican Hermin Garic placed second, 86 seconds behind the winner. Amanda McGrory of Savoy, Ill., won the women’s division and placed fourth overall among 18 racers.
The five-kilometer run saw 3,303 finishers this year with top honors going to Jonathan Gauthier of Salt Lake City, Utah and Jessica Cardin of Sutton, Mass. Erik Gleba of Cassville ran 55th, tops among area runners, with Ilion’s Dalton Crim (65th) and Mohawk’s Edward Bandel (67th) close behind. Gianna Latella of Cassville was the sixth female finisher and 80th overall.
Gleba and Latella helped Sauquoit Valley sweep first place for boys and girls in the five-kilometer high school team challenge. The Holland Patent boys and New Hartford girls won the 15-kilometer challenge.
