CAZENOVIA 7, ILION 2
A five-run third inning doomed the Ilion Golden Bombers in Thursday's 7-2 loss to Cazenovia in a Section III Class B-2 quarterfinal game at Diss Memorial Field.
Only two of the runs in that inning were earned against starter Tyler Brien. The rest came on fielding errors as the Golden Bombers struggled to settle in.
Brien and the rest of the Ilion squad allowed just one run after the third and shut the Lakers out in the final three frames, but could not pick up enough runs to overcome the opposition.
Ilion’s Travis Murray went 2-for-3 on the day with a sacrifice fly in the third inning. The Golden Bombers picked up their second run of the day in the sixth when Ryan Gookins scored on a single by Bryan Bennett.
Gookins got on base with a leadoff double.
Ilion finishes the season with a 13-5 record.
