MOHAWK VALLEY DIAMONDDAWGS 5, WATERTOWN WIZARDS 1
WATERTOWN, N.Y. — Billy Martin once again mystified the Watertown Wizards Friday and pitched into the eighth inning of the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs’ 5-1 win at the Duffy Fairgrounds.
Martin defeated the Wizards for the third time this summer and won at the Fairgrounds for the second straight Friday night. A redshirt freshman at Canisius College, Martin allowed one unearned run on three hits over 7 2/3 innings and improved his record against Watertown to 3-0 with a 0.87 ERA; he has made just one appearance — in relief — against the rest of the league.
Jonathan Ross’ double in the first inning plated Navarro Hall and Chris Peters to give the DiamondDawgs an early 2-0 lead that would go unchanged until the sixth. Mohawk Valley added a run by loading the bases on singles by Ross, Alfredo Brito and Patrick Chaputian then scoring on a sacrifice fly by Brian Suerdick.
Nate Shaver doubled and scored the lone Watertown run on an error in the bottom of the seventh inning but the Wizards would not threaten again.
The DiamondDawgs scored twice in the top of the eighth without a hit by taking advantage of three walks, a hit batter, two passed balls and a wild pitch. The runs charged to Cory Nelson extended the Mohawk Valley lead from two runs to four.
Ross went 3-for-5 for the DiamondDawgs who banged 11 hits off five Watertown pitchers. Hall added a pair of hits.
Devin Lange got the final out of the eighth inning for the DiamondDawgs and Kevin DeGrouttola pitched a scoreless ninth with two strikeouts.
