WRESTLING: Laken Cook among No. 1 seeds at Division II Tournament

Ilion sophomore Laken Cook is a top seed Saturday as he tries to earn a return trip to New York’s state championship wrestling tournament.

Cook, a four-time sectional class champion, already holds two Division II titles. He won the 96-pound title for Ilion two years ago then placed fourth in the state as an eighth-grader. He won again at 103 pounds while wrestling for Phoenix last year and went on to place fifth in the state.

This time, Cook will compete at 113 pounds. he enters the tournament at Onondaga Community College’s new SRC Arena with a 32-5 record but both of losses within Section III came while bumping up to higher weights; he has been beaten by Dolgeville’s Triston Engle, Saturday’s fourth seed at 126 pounds, and Sherburne-Earlville’s Spencer Franklin, the No. 1 seed at 120.

Cook and Franklin are two of the five Center State Conference’s No. 1 seeds at the tournament. Cody Santiago, Franklin’s Sherburne-Earlville teammate, is the top seed at 220 pounds while Canastota’s Zack Zupan and Anthony Finnocchiaro are No. 1s at 170 and 138, respectively. Alex Herringshaw is the No. 1 seed at 99 pounds for Holland Patent which will be joining the league for 2012-13; his brother Matt is seeded second at 132.

Ilion has six wrestlers in the lineup for Saturday’s tournament, including Cook’s younger brother Landry, a freshman 152-pounder. Andy Coffin, Andrew Burch, Bryan Bennett and Brandon Yager will compete at 106, 120, 145 and 285 pounds, respectively.

Dolgeville has the area’s largest contingent with nine wrestlers making the trip to Syracuse. In addition to Engle, Ben Nastovski is seeded second behind Laken Cook at 113 pounds and Danny Fox is seeded fifth in a 99-pound field that includes teammate Noah Handy. Other Blue Devils competing to extend their seasons are Travis Kopet and Kaleb Smith, the team’s only seniors, at 195 and 152 pounds, along with Jimmy Doolittle (145 pounds), Richard Lyon (160) and Kasey Foster (170).

Two of Mohawk’s three entries drew seeds for the tournament. John Mazza is No. 3 at 126 pounds and Stephen Davis is No. 6 at 285. Rich Rinaldi will compete at 160 pounds for the Mohicans.

Herkimer, Little Falls, Poland and Mt. Markham each has a pair of entries. Ryan Zawtocki and Shane Briggs will compete at 99 and 113 pounds for Herkimer. Little Falls has Andrew Messina at 106 pounds and Tyler McLean at 195. Poland’s entries are Albert Amacher at 113 pounds and Justin Huckabone at 152. Tanner Christian and Colton Dye represent Mt. Markham at 126 and 182 pounds.
