Morris J. Edwards Post 168 is off to a 1-1 start at the Burdell Bailey Cooper’s Cave Tournament after beating Post 197 from Westbrook, Maine, 2-1 Wednesday morning at East Side Recreation Park.
Leadoff hitter Tyler Hall scored both runs for Morris J. Edwards Post and Kody Shaw pitched a complete game with five strikeouts. Shaw walked three batters, hit one and allowed four hits.
Hall scored on a double by Luke Nethaway in the first inning then scored again when Westbrook Post committed the game’s only error in the third.
Shaw carried a shutout into the sixth inning when Westbrook Post tallied its lone run.
Kyle Hanson and Patrick Glenn had hits in addition to Hall’s single and Nethaway’s double.
Morris J. Edwards Post started the 9 a.m. game with 10 players and lost Mike Downing to an injury after he was hit by a batted ball in the top of the first inning.
Tournament play continues Thursday when Morris J. Edwards Post travels to South Glens Falls for a fame against the Tri-County Eagles, one of the tournament’s hosts.

SOUTH GLENS FALLS, N.Y. — S.D. Ireland broke a tie with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning Tuesday and defeated Morris J. Edwards Post 168 3-2 during the opening day of play in the Burdell Bailey Cooper’s Cave Tournament at Moreau Recreation Park.
Hinesburg, Vt.-based S.D. Ireland had taken a 2-0 lead in the third inning before St. Johnsville’s Morris J. Edwards Post tied the game in the top of the fifth. A disputed “safe” call in a cloud of dust at second base led to the go-ahead run scoring for S.D. Ireland in the bottom of the fifth.
Morris J. Edwards Post had the tying run on base in the top of the seventh when the game ended on a double play.
Jabin Weaver struck out eight batters and walked two over six innings but took the loss despite allowing only five S.D. Ireland hits.
Lucas McLaughlin doubled and scored a run for Morris J. Edwards Post and Dillon Holcomb also had a hit and a run scored. Dane O’Neill had a hit and drove in a run. Kody Shaw and Drew Trumbull had the team’s other hits.
