Little Falls Mounties Janela Mendl and Michael Stehnach were among the honorees June 11 at the Section III Scholar-Athlete Awards Dinner at the Rusty Rail in Canastota.

Each Section III high school may nominate one male and one female candidate from its senior class. The Scholar-Athlete Award is the highest academic honor bestowed by the organization. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have maintained a cumulative grade point average of 90 percent or better and have participated in varsity competition in a Section III-sponsored sport. Other factors such as community service, exemplary citizenship or other extracurricular activities are taken into consideration.

Mendl and Stehnach are both three-sport varsity athletes. Mendl competed in field hockey, volleyball and outdoor track and field while Stehnach participated in football, volleyball and baseball.

In all, 144 athletes from the section’s 104 member schools were honored. Twenty-four honorees were ranked first in their respective classes and 117 were in their top 10s.
