SHERBURNE-EARLVILLE 53, ILION 47

ILION, N.Y. — Turnovers early in Monday’s game put Ilion in a hole and more turnovers at the end helped bury the Golden Bombers in a season-opening 53-47 loss to the Sherburne-Earlville Marauders.

The Golden Bombers turned the ball over seven times in the opening 4 1/2 minutes of play and fell behind 11-3 at the outset. They trailed by as many as nine points in the first half but rallied to take a 22-21 halftime lead. Four consecutive turnovers in the fourth quarter allowed Sherburne-Earlville to open an 11-point lead, its largest of the night, and prevented Ilion from coming back again at the end.

“We didn’t shoot the ball very well,” said coach John Wallace whose Golden Bombers shot 28.6 percent from the field and went 7-for-26 in the second half. “We weren’t patient in our offense. Many times we took shots with plenty of time left on the clock (and) I think we could have gotten better shots if we were more patient.”

The visiting Marauders (1-0) went ahead for good on Brandon McDaniel’s three-pointer from the top of the key in the final minute of the third quarter. Sherburne-Earlville closed the third quarter with a 9-2 run to go up 38-36 after falling behind by five points. A three-point play by Sean Boise and a basket in the lane by Doug Parks stretched the Marauders’ lead to seven early in the final period and the Marauders would not trail again.

Second-chance baskets by Ethan Johnson and Parks gave Sherburne-Earlville a 49-38 lead with 3 1/2 minutes to play but the Marauders were unable to put Ilion away. Tommy Moore delivered one of seven Ilion three-pointers and, following a shot clock violation by the Marauders, Richie Carpenter was fouled on another three-point try and made a pair of free throws, cutting the margin to six. Sherburne-Earlville would miss three of its next four free throws, including the front ends of two one-and-ones, and a long off-balance three by Dan Colburn pulled Ilion within five points in the final minute.

The Marauders continued to misfire from the foul line, missing three more attempts after Colburn’s basket, but the Golden Bombers (0-1) were unable to put the ball through the hoop at the other end and could get no closer. Sherburne-Earlville shot 4-for-10 in the final two minutes and 8-for-17 for the game.

Sherburne-Earlville led 18-11 at the end of the first quarter and 21-12 early in the second before enduring a 6 1/2-minute scoreless stretch. Moore scored seven straight points to start a 10-0 Ilion run that put the Golden Bombers up 22-21 at halftime. Ilion took its first lead since 3-2 when Dan Reese rebounded a missed free throw in the corner and passed the ball out to the top of the key where Mike Sparrin drained a jumper with his toe on the line and one second on the clock at the end of the second quarter.

Ilion led by as many as six points early in the third quarter and went back up by five briefly after Sherburne-Earlville had tied the game at 29.

Moore led all scorers with 21 points and added seven rebounds and three assists. Carpenter scored 13 points while Reese led the Golden Bombers with nine rebounds.

Boise had 17 points for the Marauders and McDaniel scored 13 with four assists. Parks added six points and 10 rebounds off the bench while Johnson had seven and nine.

Ilion was a two-point winner in the junior varsity game.

The Golden Bombers have 12 days off before their next game against Herkimer.
