The Poland Tornadoes celebrated the end of the first day of the Kuyahoora Valley Fall Festival Saturday with a 3-0 win over West Canada Valley, their Kuyahoora Valley neighbor, and earning a spot in Sunday’s championship match at the annual Poland Columbus Day Tournament.
The Tornadoes will take on Holland Patent, a 1-0 winner over DeRuyter, Sunday at 4 p.m.
Mark Hennings had a goal and an assist for the undefeated Tornadoes. Ross Agen and Nick Kattato each added a goal while Austin Dexter and Dan Borner had assists. Mitch Jones made made five saves in the shutout.
Mike Sternberg made 12 saves in the loss for the Indians who will meet DeRuyter in the consolation match at noon.
HOLLAND PATENT 1, DeRUYTER 0
RUSSIA, N.Y. — Ryan Ehlinger’s goal in the first half made a 1-0 winner of the Holland Patent Golden Knights Saturday in the opening round of Poland’s annual Columbus Day Tournament.
The Golden Knights got nine saves from Andy Haier in their win against DeRuyter. Garrett Conley assisted on Ehlinger’s goal.
Lukas Benjamin made 12 saves for DeRuyter.
SAUQUOIT VALLEY 6, HERKIMER 1
EAST HERKIMER, N.Y. — Nick Baran scored four goals for Sauquoit Valley Saturday in the Indians’ 6-1 win over the Herkimer Magicians.
Herkimer (4-7-1) scored first but Sauquoit Valley came back with three goals before halftime, the first two by Baran 27 seconds apart.
The Magicians led 1-0 on Mark Verenich’s Demetrius Brown-assisted goal 23 minutes into the contest. Baran answered with the tying goal three minutes later then put the Indians (6-4-0) up 2-1 with 13:27 left in the first half; Michael Stuhlman assisted on Baran’s first two goals. Zach Linck added a goal late in the half.
Baran completed a hat trick with an assist from Alex Plamondon in the 71st minute and completed his scoring with an unassisted goal two minutes later. Plamondon scored the final goal for Sauquoit Valley.
Harley Wright made 10 saves for Sauquoit Valley and Austin Perry had four for Herkimer.
The Magicians play at Mohawk Tuesday.
