BROOKDALE CC 72, HERKIMER COUNTY CC 69

Cory Soanes’ three-point shot with less than two seconds left to play gave Brookdale Community College a 72-69 win over Herkimer County Community College’s Generals Friday and put the top-ranked Jersey Blues in the NJCAA’s Division III championship game.

New Jersey’s Brookdale (32-1) plays for the national championship Saturday at 7 p.m. against Eastfield College (29-4) of Texas at SUNY-Sullivan. Herkimer (31-4) plays in the third-place game at 5 p.m. against Massachusetts’ MassBay Community College (27-7). Eastfield defeated MassBay 91-65 in Friday’s first semifinal.

Herkimer trailed 15-4 seven minutes into Friday’s game but fought back and trailed by two at halftime. The Generals made a 10-0 run in the second half and took the lead for the first time with 12:47 left to play on a Todd Hunt three-pointer. Herkimer would lead by as many as nine points and held a 62-54 advantage with less than four minutes on the clock.

The Herkimer lead was six points at the three-minute mark but Brookdale went on an 11-4 run and took a 69-68 lead on a Joe Nickerson layup with 39 seconds left. General Jerome Floyd was fouled and made the first of two shots with 17 seconds to play. Floyd missed his second shot and teammate Mike Thomas grabbed the rebound but the Generals turned the ball over without getting another shot.

Brookdale took possession with seven seconds to play and Neil Thompson set up the winning shot off the right side by Soanes who had scored just one point in the game and had missed the only previous field goal he had attempted.

Jonathan Feiler led Herkimer with 15 points and seven rebounds. Floyd added 11 points and four assists and Thomas scored 10 points.

Nickerson led Brookdale with 18 points. Paul Little added 17 points and eight rebounds.
