Hornell’s 51-game winning streak came to an end Saturday in New York’s Class C championship game in the Carrier Dome.
The Hoosick Falls Panthers of Section II defeated Section V’s Red Raiders 34-21 in the first of Saturday’s three title games. Hornell, which had not lost a game since 2008, dropped down a class this fall after winning three consecutive Class B championships.
The Red Raiders fell four games short of Massena’s state-record 55-game streak that ended in 1957. Hornell owns New York’s second winning streak of more than 50 games; Riverdale was also unbeaten over 51 games, a steak that included two ties and was broken in 1966. Onondaga owns Section III’s record with a 43-game winning streak from 2001 to 2004; Dolgeville had held the previous record at 41 a decade earlier.
Maine-Endwell of Section IV, another team that dropped down in class this fall, defeated Section II Glens Falls 42-12 in the Class B final Saturday. Maine-Endwell, last year’s Class A state champion, is the first three-time champion from its section.
Section VI Randolph and Section II Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake won titles in classes D and A, respectively, Friday. Orchard Park and New Rochelle played for the Class AA final Saturday evening.
