Section V Randolph defeated Tuckahoe of Section I in the Class D game Friday as the NYSPHSAA’s championship weekend kicked off in the Carrier Dome.

Randolph was a 28-7 winner in the meeting of two-time state champions. Randolph is the first school to win the Class D title three times; Maple Grove, Onondaga and Caledonia-Mumford have won twice. Onondaga and Caledonia-Mumford have also won championships in Class C.

Section II Burnt Hills-Ballston Spa defeated Section VI Sweet Home 40-20 in the Class A final later Friday afternoon. The state championship is the first won by Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake which was beaten by Sweet Home in the 2008 and 2009 title games. The Spartans were runners-up to Maine-Endwell of Section IV last year.

Sophomore Danny Maynard scored two touchdowns for Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake. His sister, Kayla Sutton, started in the midfield for St. Johnsville’s state championship soccer team in 2000.

Champions for the other three classes will be crowned Saturday. Hoosick Falls and Hornell meet in the Class C game at noon, followed by Maine-Endwell and Glens Falls in Class B and Orchard Park and New Rochelle in Class AA..
