ROME, N.Y. — The New Life Christian School Warriors won back-to-back games Monday and Tuesday and claimed the North Country Athletic Conference championship with their 64-62 victory over Rome’s top-seeded New York State School for the Deaf Trojans in the title games.

New Life, seeded third and s semifinal winner over No. 2 Mohawk Valley Christian Academy, won a thriller against the School for the Deaf. The Warriors jumped out to an early 10-point lead before the School for the Deaf clawed back to tie the game on several occasions. Despite three of its key players fouling out and a six-point deficit with only 1:20 left in the contest, the Trojans hit a pair of three-pointers in the final minute to pull within a single point.

With six seconds remaining, New Life’s Jon Norton hit a free throw then teammate Jake Houseman made a steal to secure the two-point win.

First-team conference all-star Philip Dickerson posted his second straight double-double for the Warriors with 30 points and 12 rebounds in the championship game. Dickerson had 22 points and 10 assists in New Life’s 60-51 win over Mohawk Valley Christian Monday.

Second-team all-star Houseman added 13 rebounds while Jeremiah Brown and Colin Cleghorn contributed 12 points and 10 rebounds, respectively. Cleghorn also led the team in steals with five while Norton led the team with four assists.

Isaiah Olivo paced the Trojans with 24 points.

This marked the second time that Al Chandler has coached New Life to a conference championship, winning his previous title in 2006-2007.

New Life advances to the New York Christian Athletic Association’s state tournament March 11-13 in Olean.
