REGION III CHAMPIONSHIP MEET

ALFRED, N.Y. — The Herkimer County Community College women brought plenty of hardware home from Alfred Saturday, including a Region III championship plaque.

The Generals rolled up 163 1/2 points in two days of competition at SUNY-Alfred and easily topped a seven-team field with Mohawk Valley Community College taking second with 115 points and SUNY-Cobleskill third with 108.

The Herkimer men finished seventh as a team with Cobleskill taking the regional title.

Chantal Salamone, a freshman from Little Falls, won two events, placed in five others and ran all of the Herkimer relays. She was rewarded by being named the outstanding field event athlete at the meet, an honor that went to teammate Kurt Vowell on the men’s side.

Salamone won the triple jump and the 100-meter hurdles. Other women’s event winners for the Generals included Amanda Davey in the 400-meter hurdles, Sarah Lazarus in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and Bethany Jennings in the shot put. Davey, Salamone and Krysta Estey, another Little Falls native, had already taken the top three spots in the regional heptathlon competition the previous week.

Vowell won the men’s triple jump competition.

Herkimer’s Sharon Howell was selected as the coach of the meet.
