LITTLE FALLS 59, HERKIMER 45

Friday’s win against Herkimer was reason enough for the Little Falls Mounties to celebrate — the 59-45 victory clinched a share of the Center State Conference’s Division II title. The bigger celebration followed a short time later when word made it to the Little Falls High School gym that Dolgeville had beaten West Canada Valley in double overtime, giving the Mounties sole claim to that title.

Several Mounties and their families remained in the gym following the completion of their own game and awaiting calls and texts with updates from Dolgeville where Blue Devil Nichole Bliss had sent the game into overtime just as the Mounties’ game was ending. Bliss and the Blue Devils eventually won 49-45 in double overtime, eliminating West Canada Valley as the lone remaining team that could catch Little Falls in the standings.

Little Falls (11-5, 8-2 CSC-II) had already taken care of its business on the court. Gen Schoff, one of three sophomore starters, scored 25 points for the Mounties and added 10 rebounds and seven blocked shots while Jenna Becker, the team’s only senior, had 16 points and 19 rebounds.

“This was probably the best game we’ve played all season,” Little Falls coach Pam Munger said. “They put it all out there on the floor (and) we got contributions from everybody at key points in the game.”

The Mounties led 19-12 early in the second quarter and let Herkimer (9-9, 4-6 CSC-II) get as close as two points before halftime. The margin stretched into double digits with a 12-2 Mountie run that spanned the end of the third quarter and beginning of the fourth.

Samantha Carswell led the Magicians with 17 points and 19 rebounds. Kayla Guidi added 11 points and 10 rebounds and Sarah Kinney scored 10 points.

Amy Hart had 10 points for Little Falls. Schoff scored more than half her points at the foul line where she shot 13-for-16. The Mounties outscored Herkimer 19-9 from the foul line while attempting only six more free throws.

Herkimer was a 35-24 junior varsity winner.

The loss ends the regular season for Herkimer which awaits the Feb. 12 meeting to seed the Section III playoffs.

Little Falls completes league play with a game at home Thursday against Mohawk.
