MACON, Ga. — They may not have qualified to play in the NCAA Tournament but the Mercer Bears will still be part of Final Four weekend.

The Bears’ early-season upset victory over the University of Southern California will be featured in “Coast to Coast ’07-08: The College Basketball Season in Review” on CBS Saturday afternoon prior to the network’s live broadcast of the national semifinals. Mercer’s athletic department provided video footage and still photos from the 96-81 victory along with Rick Cameron’s radio broadcast of the game.

The Mercer win capped an eventful opening week to the season for the Atlantic Sun Conference which saw Gardner-Webb University win at the University of Kentucky, and Belmont University defeat the universities of Cincinnati and Alabama on the road. Belmont later drew national attention with a near upset of Duke University as a No. 15 seed in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

Beating the Trojans, ranked 18th at the time, was the high point of a season that ended with an 11-19 record at Mercer. Sam Dolan, a senior from St. Johnsville, averaged 5.9 points and 4.4 rebounds and led the Bears in rebounds five times after recovering from a back injury that kept him out of the lineup against Southern California.

Dolan played 108 games in four seasons at Mercer, starting 66, and averaged 6.3 points and 4.2 rebounds while blocking 70 shots and shooting 51.3 percent from the field.

Mercer recently announced the hiring of a new head coach to replace Mark Slonaker after 11 seasons. Bob Hoffman owns a 400-171 record at the collegiate level and most recently coached in the NBA Development League and the American Basketball Association.

“Coast to Coast ’07-08” will be shown Saturday at 2 p.m. and can be seen CBS affiliates WTVH and WRGB.
