HOLLAND PATENT 40, LITTLE FALLS 27
Senior Allyson Freiermuth and the rest of Holland Patent’s Golden Knights and have had success in the Little Falls High School gymnasium before. They carried it over to Tuesday’s second half when they defeated Little Falls 40-27 in a Center State Conference crossover featuring undefeated and state-ranked teams.
Little Falls (9-1) led the Golden Knights 16-14 at halftime but Holland Patent used a 20-4 run from the start of the third quarter into the fourth to take control of the game. Freiermuth, the most valuable player at Little Falls’ 2010 and 2011 Kasner Klassics, had 20 points, 17 rebounds, three steals and three blocked shots as the Golden Knights won for the fifth time in five games on the Mounties’ home court.
A defensive adjustment at halftime swung Tuesday’s momentum in the Golden Knights’ favor.
“They took us right out of what we were doing,” coach Pam Munger said after Little Falls had a 14-game regular season winning streak snapped. “We weren’t able to do anything offensively.”
The Mounties had helped themselves with their outside shooting in the first half. Back-to-back three-pointers by Kelli Shepardson and Hannah Becker had given them a 9-5 lead at the end of the first quarter and Becker hit again in the second to make the score 16-10 with 4:28 left in the half.
Little Falls would score four points over the next 16 minutes and 17 seconds of game time, a span that saw Holland Patent build a 34-20 lead.
“We didn’t take advantage of our outside shooting,” Munger said. “That kept us in the game. Then we stopped taking shots or we didn’t hit them.”
Freiermuth, a 1,000-point scorer, had 10 of Holland Patent’s 14 points in the first half but it was freshman guard Alyssa Curtis who put the Golden Knights in the lead. Curtis hit a three-point shot for the first basket of the second half then scored her only other points on a layup following a steal 25 seconds later. Holland Patent had only two more baskets in the third quarter but ended the period with a 24-20 lead. Jessica Livesey’s last minute basket provided the first two of 12 consecutive points scored by Holland Patent.
“That’s a great team. I’m real impressed,” Holland Patent coach Bob Butcher said. “(The Mounties) aren’t ranked second in the state (in Class C) for no reason. We came out a little flat but we did some real good things in the second half. We hit some shots.”

Korey Bunal had eight points and three steals before fouling out for the Golden Knights, ranked 16th in Class B.
Becker led Little Falls with 13 points while Gen Schoff and Shepardson each had seven. Schoff also had 14 rebounds and three steals.
Little Falls’ loss leaves Section III with four undefeated teams — Holland Patent, South Jefferson and Westhill in Class B and Oriskany in Class D.
Section VII Au Sable Valley also suffered its first loss Tuesday against Beekmantown. The state’s three remaining unbeaten Class C teams are top-ranked Alexander Hamilton in Section I, Chautauqua Lake in Section VI and Harpursville in Section IV.
The Mounties return to Division II play Thursday for a home game against West Canada Valley then travel to Ilion for a game Saturday afternoon. Holland Patent meets Clinton Thursday in Division I then heads to Utica for the Juggler Classic Saturday and a game against state-ranked Notre Dame.
Little Falls visits Holland Patent for a rematch Jan. 23.
