LITTLE FALLS 56, HERKIMER 38
A close game turned into an easy win for the Little Falls Mounties who pulled away from the Herkimer Magicians in the second half for a 56-38 victory on Thursday.
The Mounties trailed early and had just a two-point lead at halftime.
“I would like us to be a little more consistent early in the game,” Mounties coach Brian Dodge said. “We’re not going to always have great second halves.”
On Thursday, Little Falls opened the third quarter with a 12-3 run that included the first of junior Tyler Baumeister’s three three-point shots of the quarter. Baumeister scored 11 of his 13 total points in the third period, and the Mounties outscored the Magicians 19-8.
“Our defense in the second half won the game,” said Dodge. “Our key at halftime was to keep pressuring the ball, and we got some fast break points off of that.”
The Mounties held Herkimer to 17 points in the second half.
Jake Yallowitz led the Mounties with 14 points. He had nine assists and went 4-for-5 from the foul line. Paul Mihevc had three three-point shots and finished the game with 10 points.
Zach McLaughlin had three assists and four rebounds for Little Falls. Dom LaCoppola had four rebounds as well. Senior Nick Edick went 2-for-2 at the foul line in the Mounties’ final home game of the regular season.
“I’m proud of all five of my seniors,” said Dodge. “They work hard, they accept their roles, and they play good hard basketball.”
Herkimer’s Teddy Borek led the Magicians with 15 points. Teammate Sean Crandall had 13.
Herkimer plays again on Saturday when the Magicians travel to Sauquoit Valley. The Mounties will play their final league game against Dolgeville on the road Tuesday.
