FORT PLAIN 2, ST. JOHNSVILLE/OPPENHEIM-EPHRATAH 1, overtime
OPPENHEIM, N.Y. — St. Johnsville/Oppenheim-Ephratah defeated the Fort Plain Hilltoppers twice during Western Athletic Conference play this season. The third time produced no such charm for the Hawks.
Kaitlyn Trembley scored in sudden death overtime play to give the Hilltoppers (8-9-0) a 2-1 win on the road at Ed’s Field. The teams ended regulation tied at 1 and remained deadlocked after two 10-minute overtime periods. Trembley’s golden goal halted the match just 19 seconds into the first five-minute period of sudden death competition.
The win follows a similar victory one day earlier for the Fort Plain boys who defeated Middleburgh 1-0 on a goal less than 30 second into overtime. Both Hilltopper squads meet Waterford-Halfmoon in the next round.
Saturday’s match was scoreless at halftime and St. Johnsville/Oppenheim-Ephratah struck first early in the second half. Julia Lull gave the Hawks (8-7-2) a 1-0 lead with a goal on a direct kick in the 48th minute of play.
Seven minutes later, a goal by Kelsey Logan tied the score.
St. Johnsville/Oppenheim-Ephratah had a chance to retake the lead on a penalty kick but Meghan Beaulieu’s shot sailed over the crossbar.
The Hilltoppers meet Waterford-Halfmoon Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at Broadalbin-Perth High School.
