MOHAWK VALLEY DIAMONDDAWGS 7, ALBANY DUTCHMEN 1

Eric Helmrich and Jack Morrow homered Friday as the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs used the long ball to beat Albany’s Dutchmen 7-1 at Veterans Memorial Park.

Albany had taken a 1-0 lead in the third inning and tried to add a run in the fourth. DiamondDawgs catcher Eddie Sorondo threw Jack Wietlispach out at second base to end the top of the fourth as the Dutchmen attempted a double steal. Shortstop Tom Valichka tagged Wietlispach out before Jared Martin reached the plate on the front end.

Limited to one hit through three innings, the DiamondDawgs finally got to Albany starter Andrew Furber in the fourth. Furber hit David Del Grande with a pitch then gave up an Andy Heck single. Another hit by Chris Cruz sent Del Grande home and tied the game at 1. Helmrich followed with his third home run  of the summer, a three-run blast to left field that put the DiamondDawgs up 4-1. Morrow singled and came around to score another run on an error.

Morrow, a right-handed hitter from Young Harris College, went opposite field an inning later with for a two-run home run with Cruz on base again.

Taylor Alvarez relieved Furber to start the sixth inning and retired all nine Mohawk Valley batters he faced.

Bryant University’s Joe Michaud went five innings for his first win of the season. He allowed an unearned run when Jon Mestas reached base on an error with two outs and Will Remillard drove the run home with a double.

Marist College’s Helmrich is the first Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League player to reach three home runs. His 10 runs batted in trail leader Mike Vigliarolo of Glens Falls by one.

With six strikeouts, Michaud raised his total to 16 to match teammate John Means for the league lead in that category.

Morrow had two hits for the DiamondDawgs and Wietlispach had two for the Dutchmen.

Mohawk Valley travels to Newark for a game Saturday and has a scheduled day off Sunday. The DiamondDawgs are home Monday and Tuesday against Newark and Amsterdam.
