DOLGEVILLE 49, LITTLE FALLS 43, overtime
DOLGEVILLE, N.Y. — The Little Falls Mounties fell from the ranks of the unbeaten Wednesday when Dolgeville’s Blue Devils beat them 49-43 in overtime.
The Blue Devils got baskets from Sarah Reardon and Nichole Bliss in the final minute and a half of regulation then outscored Little Falls 13-7 in the four-minute extra session to earn their first victory over the Mounties since reinstating their program a decade ago.
“I’m so proud of these kids,” Dolgeville coach Lee Quackenbush said. “It’s been a lot of hard work the last few years and they never gave up. This is our crowning achievement so far ... and we’re not done yet.”
“This win means the world to us,” senior Kassie Gonyea added.
Olivia Tooley scored to give Little Falls (15-1, 9-1 CSC-I) a 36-32 lead late in the fourth quarter. Reardon’s basket brought Dolgeville within two points with 1:25 left in regulation and Bliss put back an offensive rebound for her only field goal of the night at the 24-second mark. Little Falls turned the ball over on the ensuing inbounding play but Tooley tied Gonyea up with four second on the clock and possession went back to the Mounties on the jump ball call. Carrin LaCoppola’s jumper hit the rim at the buzzer and the game went to overtime tied at 36.
Reardon had the first basket in overtime and Dolgeville led the rest of the way. The Blue Devils (9-7, 5-5 CSC-I) added a basket before Tooley was fouled on a drive to the basket and added a free throw to complete a three-point play. A foul shot by Reardon made it a two-point game again and Corinne Alling converted a steal into a layup for a four-point advantage. Gonyea then stole Little Falls’ inbounding pass and made both shots of a one-and-one to put Dolgeville up by six points for its largest lead of the night with one minute left to play.
Jordan Mitchell was fouled on a drive to the basket and made two free throws for Little Falls. Tooley then drove for a basket following a Dolgeville turnover and the Mounties were back within a basket with 37 seconds left.
The Blue Devils sealed the win by hitting four of their last six foul shots.
The Mounties led 20-13 at halftime but Dolgeville cut its deficit to one point by the end of the third quarter and held Little Falls to single-digit scoring in the third and fourth quarters and overtime.
“They played hard man defense,” Little Falls coach Pam Munger said. “We were frustrated (because) we were not able to make the passes we needed to make.”
Dolgeville defense pressured Little Falls into 24 turnovers and the Mounties had no player make even 30 percent of her shots.
“The little easy chippies we should have made when we had the opportunities we did not,” Munger said.
Seniors Gonyea, Reardon and Alling combined to score 39 of the 49 Dolgeville points. Alling went 8-for-8 at the foul line and scored 14 points; Reardon had 13 points and four steals; and Gonyea had 12 points, nine rebounds and six steals. Bliss grabbed a team-high 14 rebounds.
Tooley had 20 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and four steals for Little Falls. Mitchell scored 12 points and Jenna Becker had 14 rebounds and eight blocked shots.
Despite the loss, the Mounties, ranked eighth in the New York State Sportswriters Association Class C poll, remain in first place in the Center State Conference’s Division I standings, one game ahead of Ilion (10-6, 8-2 CSC-I).
Dolgeville already had won more games than it had in any previous season since the program’s return. Wednesday’s win assures the team of its first .500 regular season since 1981 when the pre-shutdown Blue Devils won a state regional championship.
The Blue Devils play at home Friday against Ilion. Little Falls travels to Boonville to take on Adirondack Saturday afternoon with a 1 p.m. junior varsity tip.
