CLINTON 60, LITTLE FALLS 47
LITTLE FALLS, N.Y. — Just when Little Falls appeared set to make a decisive run, the Clinton Warriors cut the Mounties off Saturday night.
The Warriors let the Mounties cut their lead from 14 points to four in the second half of the Kasner Klassic championship game before pulling back away for a 60-47 victory.
“I was hoping that we were going to be closer,” Little Falls coach Pam Munger said after the Mounties had their regular season win streak snapped at 48 games. “I knew there was the possibility of a tight score and I’m disappointed that we weren’t able to keep it closer.”
The Mounties scored 11 of the final 12 points of the third quarter and trailed 39-35 entering the final period. They were still within five points with six minutes to play when Clinton made its final run. Lauren Conway started an 11-3 run with a putback and Allie Donovan, the tournament’s most valuable player, followed with a wide open three-pointer on the Warriors’ next trip down the floor. Munger called a timeout and when play resumed, Kati Griffiths added a steal and a layup for Clinton.
The margin stayed in double digits from that point forward.
“We stuck with our game plan and kept pressuring them with our guards,” Clinton coach Tom Trevisani said. “We got some turnovers and we (capitalized) on them. That’s how we built the lead and that’s how we built it up again.”
Donovan contributed five steals to the pressure and had three early in the game to help set the tone for the Warriors. Playing only her second game after missing the start of the season with an injury, Donovan scored 11 points and was one of three players in double figures for Clinton. Conway scored 12 points and Griffiths had 11; both were picked for the tournament all-star team along with Riley Spellman who scored eight points.
Clinton (9-2) held the lead for most of the game. The Warriors led 18-12 at the end of the first quarter and Little Falls pulled even in the middle of the second quarter. Clinton then closed the first half with a 9-0 run and stretched its lead to 14 points by outscoring the Mounties 11-6 over the first 4 1/2 minutes of the third quarter.
Little Falls (8-1) kept itself in the game at the foul line. The Mounties shot 30 free throws and made 21 to account for almost half of their points. Freshman center Jenna Becker shot 10-for-12 and scored 16 points to lead the team; she also grabbed five rebounds and blocked two shots. Sue Schoff went 9-for-13 at the line and added 12 points and 11 rebounds. Olivia Tooley had 13 points and seven steals.
Becker and Sara Helmer represented Little Falls on a tournament all-star team that also included Nicole Eisenhut of Waterville and Renee Whelan of Sauquoit Valley.
Clinton is the first team other than Little Falls to win the Kasner Klassic. Little Falls had won the three previous tournaments and defeated Clinton in the championship game last winter.
Ilion won the junior varsity tournament with a 48-46 double-overtime victory over Waterville Saturday. Clinton defeated Sauquoit Valley in the junior varsity consolation game. Ed Kasner Sportsmanship Awards were presented to Sauquoit Valley’s Whitney Geglia, Clinton’s Ashley Weaver, Waterville’s Dylanne Hodge and Ilion’s Amanda Alexander.
Little Falls plays at home again Monday against West Canada Valley with tip-off scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
