APRIL 20 COLLEGE SOFTBALL
Late Monday morning, sirens could be heard from afar as village police escorted the Herkimer County Community College softball team back to campus with the NJCAA’s Division III championship trophy.
The team battled it out in Rochester, Minn., on Saturday night, beating Dutchess Community College 6-5 in the semifinals and later beating Brookdale Community College 5-2 to bring home the first-ever national softball championship for the school.
After the bus pulled up to campus, coach P.J. Anadio stepped off the bus with the trophy held high over his head and pointed the number one to the excited crowd of faculty, family and friends waiting to congratulate team members on their big win.

Chronological list of Herkimer County Community College’s 38 team and indivdual NJCAA national championships:
MAY 18 COLLEGE SOFTBALL
A long day in Minnesota ended late Saturday with the Herkimer County Community College Generals hoisting the NJCAA’s Division III championship trophy.
The eight-team, double-elimination World Series was held up by rain Friday and Herkimer, the No. 2 seed, wound up beating No. 1 Brookdale Community College 5-2 for the championship.
MAY 18 NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION
Carmelo Anthony was nearly unstoppable for three quarters.
He faltered in the fourth, and now New York’s season is over.
Roy Hibbert’s block of Anthony’s dunk attempt midway through the fourth quarter spurred an 11-2 run that rallied the Indiana Pacers to a 106-99 victory over the Knicks in Game 6 of their second-round series, sending them into their first Eastern Conference final since 2004.
MAY 18 HORSE RACING
Right from the start, a horse trained by one not so over-the-hill Hall of Famer and ridden by another took control of the Preakness. The result: a huge upset and the end of any hopes for a Triple Crown attempt at the Belmont Stakes.
Thanks to Oxbow’s wire-to-wire win Saturday over Kentucky Derby winner Orb, trainer D. Wayne Lukas and jockey Gary Stevens have themselves another classic to add to their stellar resumes.
MAY 18 MEN'S LACROSSE
Redshirt freshman Dylan Donahue scored with 13 seconds remaining to lift top-seeded Syracuse past Yale 7-6 in the NCAA tournament quarterfinals Saturday.
The Orange (15-3) will face the winner of Sunday’s Denver-North Carolina match in next Saturday’s semifinals in Philadelphia.
MAY 18 HORSE RACING
All eyes will be on Kentucky Derby winner Orb in the Preakness Stakes on Saturday. The 3-year-old colt will take on eight challengers in the second leg of the Triple Crown. If he wins, Orb will attempt to become the first Triple Crown champion since Affirmed in 1978 at the Belmont Stakes on June 8. In the Preakness, Orb will be facing five horses he defeated in the Derby and three who did not run in the race.
Here's a guide to watching the race:
MAY 17 MEN'S LACROSSE
When top-seeded Syracuse faces off against Ivy League-champion Yale in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division I lacrosse tournament, the Orange will be staring at a mirror image of sorts.
Just like Syracuse (14-3), the Bulldogs (12-4) seem to thrive when they're down. Just ask Penn State.
Yale trailed the No. 8 Nittany Lions 5-1 at halftime last week, then rallied to win 10-7, becoming the first team in NCAA history to cap a victorious comeback after scoring only one goal in the opening half.
Not bad for an unseeded team.
MAY 14 GIRLS' TRACK AND FIELD
A strong showing bey their sprinters led the Mt. Markham Mustangs to a second-place showing Tuesday at the Center State Conference’s Division II championship meet.
The Mustangs went 1-2-3 in the 100-meter dash and 1-2-4 in the 200. Mt. Markham edged Cooperstown by four points to finish as the runner-up to champion Sauquoit Valley.
MAY 14 BOYS' TRACK AND FIELD
Dustin DuBrule and Ross Agen each won an event Tuesday and helped Poland to a third-place finish at the Center State Conference’s Division III championship meet.
Competing for the first time with its own full schedule, Poland accumulated 58 points at the league meet and finished behind champion New York Mills and Old Forge at the seven-team meet. Sauquoit Valley won the Division II crown.
MAY 17 COLLEGE BASEBALL
Herkimer County Community College won its opening game at Region III’s Final Four tournament Friday and moves on in the winner’s bracket Saturday afternoon.
The seventh-ranked and top-seeded Generals defeated Onondaga Community College 11-3 at Veterans Memorial Park to advance in double-elimination play. Niagara County Community College was an 8-1 winner earlier against Erie Community College.
