The NFL will have unaffiliated neurological consultants on the sidelines during games beginning in the 2013 season, according to Andrea Kremer of the NFL Network.

Kremer noted that the NFLPA was strongly in favor of this move.

Under the current concussion rules, independent neurologists need to clear players to return to practice or games during the week after suffering a concussion in a game. However, it has been team doctors who make the decision to clear a player to return during a game.

League counsel Jeff Pash told reporters that the doctors would not be paid by the clubs or hired as team physicians.
