Nelson G. Hoke, 88, a longtime Mohawk resident, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012, at St. Joseph’s Nursing Home, Utica.
He was born April 2, 1924, in Frankfort, the son of the late Archie and Ruby (Hight) Hoke. He was educated in Frankfort schools and received his GED from Mohawk Central School.
On Sept. 23, 1950, he was united in marriage to Mary R. Dodge of Herkimer in St. Francis de Sales Church. They shared a loving relationship of 56 years before her passing in 2006.
Serving as a proud Marine in World War II aboard the USS New York, he saw action at Okinawa and Iwo Jima. He was honorably discharged in November 1945.
Nelson was last employed at the former Kelsey Hayes in Utica.
Survivors include his brothers, John Hoke, of Mohawk, and Alfred Hoke, of Dolgeville; his sisters, Ethel Eckler, of Herkimer, Marguerite Hall, of Herkimer, Eleanor Hardy, of California, Helen Healey, of Herkimer, Irene Vandenberg, of Herkimer, and Sharon Bosch, of Little Falls; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by six brothers, Kenneth, Ira, Robert, Arthur, Ernest and Archie Hoke, Jr.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, Sept. 21, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. from the Petykiewicz, Iocovozzi and Burns Funeral Home, 329 S. Washington St., Herkimer, and at 11 a.m. from Blessed Sacrament Church, 54 E. Main St., Mohawk, where his funeral mass will be celebrated by the Rev. Mark Cunningham, sacramental minister, assisted by Sister Mary Jo Tallman, CSJ, parish life director. Burial will follow at Mohawk Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest next to the love of his life, Mary.
