Mr. James Enoch Chorlton, 84, of 38 Clinton Ave., Fort Plain, died Saturday, June 6, 2009, at the Life Care Center in Plano, Texas, after a brief illness.
Jim was born in Swinton Staffs., England, on August 23, 1924, the son of Joseph and Florence (Cartlidge) Chorlton, and was educated in schools in England.
He left England and went to Sudbury, Canada, in 1957, and then came to the United States in February 1965, first settling in New Jersey. He then moved to Sable, N.Y., near Indian Lake where he owned and operated the Squaw Brook Motel from 1983 until he retired in 2000.
He first married Mary Mann in October 1948. She predeceased him on November 21, 2002. He then married Gladys Pointon Bailey on July 31, 2004.
Jim is survived by his wife Gladys; his children, sons Andrew and his wife Kristy Chorlton of St. Johnsville and Steven Chorlton of North Carolina, and his daughter and her husband, Patricia and David Ashford of New Jersey; his sisters, Josie and her husband Harold Thomas of New Jersey and Dorothy and her husband Jack Stubbs of Doncaster, England; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and his step children, Morton Pointon II of Dolgeville, Carol and her husband Ralph Begeal of Bath and Krystal and Chris Reed of Plano, Texas. He was predeceased by a son, Paul Chorlton, in August 2006.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Roberts & Enea Funeral Home, 3 Faville Ave., Dolgeville, with the Rev. David Bowley officiating. Burial will be in the Fort Plain Cemetery. Friends may call on Thursday from 6-8 p.m.
