Mr. Donald H. Poore, 84, of 1521 Snells Bush Rd., town of Manheim, Little Falls, died Sunday afternoon, Sept. 9, 2012, at the Alpine Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Little Falls, with his loving wife and family at his side.
Don was born on April 29, 1928, in Kitchner, Ontario, Canada, the son of the late John and Myrtle (Rickert) Poore, and was educated in schools in Canada.
While residing in Canada, he was a member of the Highland Infantry, serving from 1945 to 1949. He came to the United States in 1956, locating in Herkimer, where he was employed by the Standard Furniture Company as a foreman until 1970 when the company closed. Don then purchased a dairy farm on the Snells Bush Road in the town of Manheim and retired from there in 1995.
Don was twice married, first to Marjorie Bennett on Jan. 30, 1959, in Herkimer. She predeceased him on Nov. 17, 1991. He then was united in marriage to Donna Mabbett on May 22, 1992, on the family farm.
While farming, he was a member of the Dolgeville Co-op, along with membership in the Dolgeville Rod and Gun Club. His personal interests were in woodworking, gardening and hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Donna; his sons and their wives, Richard and Marsha Poore, of Leesport, Pa., and Douglas and Veronica Poore, of Westmoreland; his daughter and her husband, Valerie and Richard Foster, of Salisbury Center; his step children, Keith and Sharon Mabbett, of Florida, Laurie and Jim Blackburn, of Fulton, and Sari and Jeffery Overmyer, of Minnesota; six brothers and sisters, all in Canada; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In keeping with his wishes, there will be no formal services or calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Don’s name may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
