When Ted Kawryga arrived in the Dolgeville Central School District in July 2005 he said that he was right where he wanted to be.
After five years as the district’s superintendent of schools, that belief has not changed.
“I consider myself lucky to have been able to work in a place like Dolgeville,” said Kawryga. “I honestly believe that I could not have ended up in a better place than this school and community.”
Kawryga announced his intention to retire at the end of the school year Tuesday night.
“I had a very hard time in coming to this decision, but I feel it is time for me to retire,” he said.
Kawryga thanked the members of the board of education, many of whom have served alongside him throughout his tenure in Dolgeville, for their continued support.
“I can not say thank you enough to the board of education for giving me this opportunity,” he said. “I consider it a privilege to have been able to work with so many fine and dedicated people.”
Kawryga did not have an exact date for his retirement, but said he would stay on until a new superintendent is appointed. “As of right now I am thinking August, that way I can assist in the process of hiring a superintendent and help that person become acclimated to the district,” he said.
He added that with the announcement made, he can get back to focusing on the district and its students. “I do not want this to be about me,” said Kawryga. “Now that the announcement has been made we can move forward and get back to the business of educating students.”
Details of the search process to find a candidate to replace Kawryga as superintendent were not discussed Tuesday night.
Kawryga, a Syracuse native, graduated from Central Syracuse Technical High School in 1969. He continued his studies at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and earned his bachelor’s degree in history from the State University of New York College at Brockport in 1973.
He began his career in education as a member of the faculty at Delaware Elementary School in Syracuse and continued to work in the Syracuse City School District as an elementary and middle school teacher as he earned his administrative certification from SUNY Oswego in 1995. After earning his certification he became a high school vice principal in the Central Square Central School District and was later named high school principal in the Solvay Union Free School District. He left Solvay after three years to become high school principal in the Altmar-Parish-Williamstown Central School District. He left APW after three years to become superintendent of the Dolgeville Central School District.
Kawryga replaced Sharon Colpoys as superintendent. During his time in Dolgeville, he has helped guide the district through a $7 million EXCEL capital project that addressed numerous areas of need, including making the buildings more energy efficient and more safe and secure for students.
