People saw blocks of ice during last year’s ice harvest in Millers Mills. In the water is Jason Cook of the Cedarville Volunteer Fire Department. Cook wore a suit the fire department uses for cold water rescues. This year’s festival has been canceled due to a lack of ice.

The 2012 Millers Mills Ice Harvest has been canceled.
The members of the Millers Mills Grange were forced to cancel this year’s event due to a lack of ice.
The event is scheduled every year for the second Sunday in February and this year was no different. Feb. 12 was when the harvest was supposed to take place, but because of the warmer temperatures, the harvest will no longer be taking place this year.
Harvest chairman Dave Huxtable said, “this is extremely unusual.”
Miller Mills pond currently has very little ice coverage and the ice that is available is not a thick enough amount needed for the ice harvest, he said.
In order for the ice to be properly harvested it must be 10 inches thick, he said.
“In mid-January the ice was nine inches thick, more than there is now, but not enough for the harvest,” said Huxtable during a telephone interview Friday afternoon.
According to organizers this is the third time in seven years the Millers Mills Ice Harvest has fallen victim to a mild winter.
The lack of ice will have no effect on the Miller Mills Grange’s Old-fashioned Ice Cream Social, scheduled for July 15, said Huxtable. For information on this event, visit the Milers Mills Grange website at www.millersmillsny.com.
