Organizers were pleased with the turnout Friday for their Meet the Artists reception kicking off the inaugural Be Inspired By Arts art festival.
Approximately 100 people visited the former Daniel Green shoe factory on South Main Street in the village to meet several area artists and view their selected works.
The show runs each weekend through the month of October.
“We started out looking for local artists,” said painter Lutz Scherneck, a coalition member. “A few weren’t available or had conflicts. Once we didn’t have enough (in the immediate area) we started looking further away.”
Through his own contacts in the art world, Scherneck was able to attract participation from a hand-selected group of artists for a show he described as invitational rather than juried.
“I sought out the people I knew and I selected the best (work) that they had available at the time,” Scherneck said. “You see the results here. It’s a nice selection; we wanted to make sure it wasn’t all flowers, it wasn’t all watercolors.”
In addition to paintings by artists including Scherneck, the walls of the historic factory display found object creations. Sculptures and stoneware are also on display. Working within the building’s confines and playing to its history, crates stamped “Daniel Green Felt Shoe Co.” have been converted for display purposes. Participating artists and coalition members contributed pedestals and helped with lighting for the show.
In keeping with their mission statement — “To promote unity in our community through interaction with the arts and to encourage a spirit of cohesiveness by making art accessible to all” — the show has a bring-art-to-the-masses feel.
“We also wanted to make sure the art that was presented was a good introduction to the area,” coalition member Patricia Callahan said. “In Dolgeville, for example, there aren’t any other art galleries. We wanted bring it to the people (and) show them what’s here.”
The show is open Saturdays 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays noon to 4 p.m.
