Happening today: The European Championship (aka the Euros and Euro 2012) begin today. The soccer tournament is the biggest one outside of the World Cup, and many of the world’s best players will be there, including Ronaldo. This year’s tournament is expected to draw lots of interest, some of it for the wrong reasons – racist fans in Poland and Ukraine. Games in the U.S. are being played at 12 p.m. EDT and 2:45 p.m. EDT and will be broadcast on ESPN. Check out ESPN and Fox Soccer for more information.

In the news: The West Coast is stepping up preparations for the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and other tsunami debris after a dock from Japan washed up in Oregon this week. Experts say the debris can be expected any time from now until 2014, with some of it potentially causing problems.

Opening bell: The Dow Jones opened at 12,460.96. It was up 46.17‎ points Thursday.
