A 54-year-old Bridgewater man who reportedly was under the influence of bath salts Thursday morning was taken into custody after he climbed on a roof armed with a shotgun, state police said.
Troopers responded to a residence on Route 8 shortly before 6 a.m. after the man’s wife reported that her husband was acting irrationally and saying he was going to use a gun against people who were watching him, Trooper Jack Keller said.
The man – whose name is not being released – then climbed onto the roof of his house with a shotgun and appeared to be yelling at non-existing people to get out of his yard, Keller said.
Once troopers arrived, the man put down the gun – which was not loaded – and came down from the roof, Keller said.
"There are no charges at this point because he didn’t threaten anyone with the gun, he just had it,” Keller said. “He obviously listened to our commands and came down. He just wasn’t making any sense.”
The man admitted to troopers that he had been using bath salts, and he was transported to St. Luke’s Healthcare in Utica for a mental health evaluation, Keller said.
Several weapons were removed from the man’s home and secured until further notice, Keller said.
In the meantime, a 45-year-old Marcy man arrested by Oneida County sheriff’s deputies earlier this week in another bath salts-related incident is due to appear in New York Mills Village Court on Friday to answer criminal charges.
David Schrader was hospitalized Monday morning after the alleged use of bath salts prompted him to randomly attack his neighbor in her car and then attempt to chase her into her home.
Schrader has been charged with second-degree burglary and attempted third-degree grand larceny.
