News to know

The Republican National Convention opened Monday in an abbreviated form because of Tropical Storm Isaac, with only a handful of delegates showing up. Isaac also abbreviated protests at the convention: Only a few hundred people of the planned 5,000 showed up to protest. The GOP convention will get under way Tuesday when Isaac has passed Tampa, Fla.; the storm is expected to hit the Gulf on Wednesday.

"We are having a swarm. We expect thousands of events (like this) over several days." - U.S. Geological Survey seismologist Lucy Jones, talking about a series of earthquakes in southern California that took place on Sunday. Officials say the swarm of quakes is the worst since the 1970s.
