Patriotic choral music floated above hundreds of heads at Holy Family Parish church in the city on Sunday, honoring past veterans and those still serving.
“I have a lot of military people in my family,” said event organizer Mary Puznowski. “It means a lot to me to honor the veterans.”
Music, along with speeches, a flag-folding ceremony and honoring each branch of veterans, was featured during the Veterans Day event in Little Falls. A light dinner reception followed afterward.
“We should never forget the veterans,” Puznowski said. “We owe our freedom to the veterans.”
She added having so many family members who served has made her a patriotic person.
And for the veterans, their time in service has shaped who they are today.
“The military teaches you discipline and the right from wrong way,” said U.S. Army veteran John Houle. “It teaches you how to take care of yourself.”
Salisbury Center resident Dawn Austin said her time serving in the Army helped her come out of her shell. “I’m stronger. I’m more patriotic,” she said, offering advice to other women who may be considering enlisting. “To go into any type of branch of service, it would make them better women; make them stronger.”
Houle, a Dolgeville resident, said the afternoon ceremony was emotional.
“It was definitely teary-eyed to a person that served, knowing the people that ended up with the ultimate sacrifice,” he said.
Houle said he served from 1973 to 1999 and did so to make sure his five grandchildren are protected. “To see people come together like this, it just makes you feel really warm,” he said.
Austin said it’s great to see so many people honoring veterans.
“It makes you feel so good to know you’re appreciated,” she said.
