A photo snapped of the Adirondack Mountains during its peak season in the fall has graced the cover of the new Herkimer County guide produced by the Herkimer County Chamber of Commerce.
John Scarano, the chamber’s executive director, said the photo depicts a tranquil scene. “It had the Adirondacks in there and it seemed real peaceful. That’s what our county is all about,” he said.
The photo was taken by Hayley Killian, of Cold Brook, who was awarded $100 for her winning shot.
Scarano said Killian, a junior at West Canada Valley Central School, took the photo that includes the silhouettes of a pine tree and an Adirondack-style chair at McCauley Mountain in Old Forge.
Other photos submitted were used throughout the brochure.
A total of 30,000 guide books have been printed. Scarano said 10,000 of them have already been distributed to the Binghamton, North Country and Rochester areas. The guides have also been distributed to bus tour companies, he said.
“A lot of bus tours come up this way, so, A, people will know what to look for and, B, it will be for planning purposes,” said Scarano.
The guides have also been given to the county Industrial Development Agency to include with their promotional folders for businesses interested in coming to the area. The IDA purchased a full page advertisement opposite the county map.
The brochure was funded by the chamber and its advertisers.
The Herkimer County Legislature also made a contribution.
The guide includes photos of picturesque scenes from around the county, listings of things to do when visiting in summer and winter, including boating, canoeing, kayaking, snowmobiling, skiing and accommodations. It also includes a map of southern Herkimer County and parts of Old Forge and the Kuyahoora Valley.
The guide also includes festivals, but does not include dates since they change yearly, such as The Great American Irish Festival. It is instead listed as being held the last weekend of July.
“I think it will be a nice tool,” said Scarano.
New to this year’s guide is the inclusion of a chamber member’s directory which includes hotels, real estate, eateries, churches and other businesses throughout the county.
Scarano invites those who feel they missed something to contact him about it and they will try to include it for the next printing.
