Fourteen people spent the night at an American Red Cross shelter at Herkimer County Community College that was opened for residents who had to be evacuated from their homes in the area of Main Street in Herkimer because of the standoff with the suspect from Wednesday’s fatal shootings.
About 20 residents visited the shelter, but not all stayed the night.
The Red Cross provided cots, blankets, comfort kits and breakfast to those who stayed, and also provided mental health counseling and health services for residents who requested those services.
The shelter will remain open as long as needed before residents are allowed to return safely to their homes.
“We are relieved that the standoff has ended and we commend the heroic efforts of the state police, FBI and local law enforcement officials during this ordeal,” said Jennifer Balog, community chapter executive of the American Red Cross Mohawk Valley Chapter, in a statement. “The Red Cross will continue to make itself available to provide emotional support and other services for residents and families of the victims.”
