The New York State Association of County Clerks will partner with the New York Alliance for Donation during the month of April to promote organ, eye and tissue donation throughout New York state. This program is responsible for saving and improving the lives of thousands of New Yorkers in dire need of transplants.
“By working together we can make a significant difference in increasing the number of donors through our contact with residents, and we can work to make the Alliance for Donation’s goal of a significantly increased registry a reality,” Herkimer County Clerk Sylvia Rowan said last week.
Reading from a proclamation naming April as Donating Life Month in Herkimer County last week, county Legislator Janeen Maneen, District 4, said currently only 11 percent of potential donors enroll in the state Donate Life Registry, over three times below the 43 percent national average.
Maneen said New Yorkers make up 10 percent of those on the transplant list with over 105,000 men, women and children waiting for potentially life saving transplants.
She also said 19 people die every day due to the lack of available organs, and that 98 percent of New Yorkers enroll in the state Life Registry through local Department of Motor Vehicle offices.
“There is an urgent need to increase registration for donation,” said Rowan. “The precious gift of organs and tissue enhance and extend the lives of many New Yorkers.”
In a release about the local effort, county Administrator James Wallace, who received a kidney transplant from his brother, urged everyone to consider becoming an organ and tissue donor.
“I was extremely fortunate to have a match with my brother who stepped up to save my life. I also know that there are thousands of people who are not as fortunate. I hope that you will take a minute or two to consider this ‘gift,’” he said.
Brochures, posters and enrollment forms alerting customers of the donor crisis can be found in the DMV office in the county office building at 109 Mary St., Herkimer.
Customers interested in enrolling on the Life Registry can also enroll by checking off the organ donor box on any license or non-driver identification card transaction.
Forms are also available on www.donatelifenys.net or www.donatelifecdt.org.
