Top ten students of Class of 2009 named in Fort Plain

Fort Plain Junior-Senior High School Principal Deborah Larrabee has announced the names of the top ten students of the  school’s Class of 2009 as follows.
Valedictorian Kristen A. Wolfe, daughter of Pat and Kate Wolfe, has been involved in National Honor Society, OK2XL, jazz band, All-County Band, Harmony, the New York State School Music Association competition, the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council (SSAC), Area All-State, yearbook as editor, soccer and is class treasurer. Her honors include the Times-Union Scholarship Recognition Dinner. Outside of school, Wolfe is active in Valley Alliance Church and is employed by Price Chopper.
In the fall, she will attend Grove City College to major in biology.
Salutatorian John Resch, son of Joanne and Christopher Resch, has been public relations officer for Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), vice president of SSAC, president of National Honor Society, president of band and secretary of chorus. Throughout high school he has participated in varsity basketball and varsity track and he ran cross country as a sophomore. Resch’s awards and honors include Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership, Boys State, Capital Region Top Scholar Athlete for basketball and Sports Foundation of the Capital Region Scholar Athlete Award. Outside of school he is a member and altar server at St. James Church.
In the fall, Resch will attend SUNY Oneonta as a music industry major.
Ashley Crews, daughter of Bonnie and James Crews Jr., has been vice president of student council, vice president of SADD, a member of SSAC and a member of National Honor Society. Crews has been active in soccer and cheerleading throughout high school. Among her awards and honors are Board of Education Academic Excellence Award, Western Athletic Conference North Most Outstanding Cheerleader and WAC North first team soccer all-star. Crews is employed by Parkside Drive-In.
After graduation, she will attend The College of Saint Rose and major in biology/physical therapy.
Bethany Hicks, daughter of Bruce and Lori Hicks, has been a historian of National Honor Society; member of SSAC, OK2XL, prom committee, band, jazz band, marching band and All-County Band; and she has been a class officer for four years. Hicks has been involved in soccer for four years and cheerleading as a sophomore and junior. Hicks’ awards and honors include Academic Excellence Award, principal’s list for four years, WAC Academic All-Star, George Eastman Young Leaders Award and student of the month. She is a member and sexton at St. John’s Lutheran Church and works at McDonald’s.
Hicks will attend SUNY Albany to major in political science.
Josiah Horton, son of Mark Horton, has participated in chorus, band, jazz band, marching band, chorus, select choir, All-County Choir, library club, OK2XL and soccer. Horton’s awards and honors include principal's list, 9-12; Academic Excellence Award; Excellence in Jazz Band, 10-11; Excellence in Chorus, 10. Outside of school he has worked at the Charter House and Beardslee Castle, and was president of Junior Firefighters Explorers.
Horton will attend Fulton-Montgomery Community College with the intention of transferring after one year to SUNY Oneonta as a music industry major.
Rebekah McVeigh, daughter of Edward McVeiigh, has been a class officer, library club treasurer, vice president of National Honor Society and a member of SADD, SSAC and the bowling team. McVeigh’s awards and honors include Government Award, Conscientious Math Student Award, Calculus Award and principal’s list. She is a member of Valley Alliance Church.
In the fall, McVeigh will attend Grove City College to major in molecular biology.
Courtney L. Quackenbush, daughter of Thomas and Susan Quackenbush, has participated in National Honor Society, soccer and bowling. Her awards and honors include 90+ average for four years, WAC first team bowling all-star, second effort in bowling, WAC Scholar Athlete, principal’s list and honor roll. Quackenbush is communicant at St. James Church and is employed by Iroquois Lanes.
She will enter the doctor of pharmacy program at Albany College of Pharmacy.
Marie Sinchak, daughter of Joseph and Cindy Sinchak, is SSAC secretary, class of 2009 secretary, student council secretary, National Honor Society secretary, yearbook business manager and a member of chorus, band and Harmony. She has been active in softball in grades 9-12 and swimming in grades 9-10. Sinchak has been on the principal’s list for the past four years, is a member of Valley Alliance Church and works at Johnstone Florist.
She will attend SUNY Brockport to study in the education field.
Samantha Steenburg, daughter of Allan Steenburg Jr. and April Boyer, has been a member of National Honor Society, Harmony, All-County and Area All-State Choirs. Throughout high school, she has been active in volleyball, bowling and softball. Steenburg’s awards and honors include permanent principal’s list, Superintendent’s Award and scholar athlete award. She is employed at McDonald’s.
Steenburg will attend FMCC as a nursing major.
Jennette Webb, daughter of Melinda and Dave Webb, has been class president, grades 10-12; yearbook business editor; and a member of SSAC, National Honor Society and the prom committee. From grades 10-12, Webb has been a member of the varsity bowling team and the varsity soccer team. Her awards and honors include Girls State, WAC bowling all-star and WAC soccer all-star. Webb attends Freysbush United Methodist Church and works at the Villa Isidoro.
She will attend SUNY Oneonta to major in elementary education–Spanish.
