The second annual Valentine’s in Little Falls celebration will get under way Friday and will include activities throughout the day and night on Saturday.
“The concept is simple, when we all work together we improve the chances that any one event will have a good turnout. So maybe a person or family wouldn’t come to Little Falls just to see Bob Willman’s art opening at the Mohawk Valley Center for the Arts, but knowing they can do that and take their children to the Tea Party with Elmo at the Shops at 25 West makes a coming to Little Falls a nice afternoon adventure,” event organizer Christine Van Meter said in an e-mail.
Planned events include the Valentine’s Dance and Get Together on Friday from 8 to 11 p.m. at the former Masonic Temple at 5 Prospect St. Tickets will be $10 at the door and everyone is welcome.
Saturday’s events will include an indoor farmers’ market from 9 a.m. to noon at the Little Falls Senior and Community Center at 524 E. Main St. The farmers’ market, said Van Meter, will offer fresh winter produce, grass-fed beef, free range chickens and eggs, olive oils, alpaca yarn and woven products, herbal products, beeswax candles, knitted items and a Girl Scout cookie sale.
Also on Saturday, the For the Love of Chocolate bake sale to benefit Preserve Our Past will begin at 9 a.m. at the Big M and will continue until all items are sold. At the Little Falls Family YMCA, individuals and families can register to take part in a hike to Buttermilk Falls beginning at 10 a.m.
Also at the YMCA, family day will take place from 3 to 5 p.m., where everyone is welcome to swim from 3 to 4 p.m. and utilize the game room and gymnasium from 3 to 5 p.m.
Saturday’s schedule will also include open houses at the Little Falls Antique Center and the Shops at 25 West, where the Tea Party with Elmo will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. The Community Co-Op at 589 E. Albany St. will provide a tasting of regional cheeses from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the Little Falls High School Future Business Leaders of America and Ole Sal’s will sponsor street hockey from 10 a.m. to noon in Canal Place. All equipment will be provided. In Eastern Park from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., individuals can meet to play Ultimate Frisbee in the mud. Additionally, R.D.’s Gorge View Lanes on Burwell Street will offer free shoes, $3 games and pink milkshakes from noon to 5 p.m.
The gallery opening of Robert Willman’s watercolors exhibition at the Mohawk Valley Center for the Arts in Canal Place will take place from 2 to 4 p.m., with the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs Hot Stove Dinner scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Knights Inn on Albany Street. To purchase tickets for the dinner, contact team president Travis Heiser at travis@mydiamonddawgs.com or 895-0692.
“My family picks for the weekend are the Valentine’s dance at the Masonic Temple on Friday night, the indoor farmers’ market on Saturday morning, the muddy Frisbee game, then up to R.D.’s for some bowling and a pink milkshake, then off to Bob Willman’s art opening at the Mohawk Valley Center for the Arts and then going to the DiamondDawgs’ dinner at the Knights Inn,” said Van Meter, adding anyone who has not seen the falls hidden behind the municipal pool should participate in the hike.
The flyer listing all of the planned Valentine’s in Little Falls events is available at many city merchants, online at www.littlefallsrocks.com and on the city event Facebook page.
“The merchants of Little Falls, the FBLA and a lot of volunteers have worked pretty hard to offer a fun day in Little Falls, hopefully we will all take advantage of it,” said Van Meter.
Anyone can join the e-mail list to help plan future events in the city of Little Falls by sending an e-mail to dcvan4004@aol.com. Van Meter said the group of about 85 volunteers is currently working on planning a St. Patrick’s Day celebration because March 17 will fall on a Saturday this year.
