A 38-year-old Herkimer man faces several charges after Ilion police said he fought with officers and damaged the police station.
According to police, Anthony Chabrier, of 319 S. Bellinger St., was suspected to be driving while intoxicated. He was found to be in an intoxicated condition and passed out behind the wheel of his motor vehicle in the Sorrento’s Restaurant parking lot on Sunday at 4:31 a.m. The keys to the vehicle were in the ignition and the car was still running, said police.
Chabrier refused field sobriety testing and was placed under arrest. He then began physically fighting the two Ilion police officers. According to police, he attempted to punch the officers, refused to be handcuffed and attempted to flee.
As a result of the physical altercation, Officer Ryan Pavlot sustained ankle injuries. Pavlot was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital in Utica by ambulance where he received treatment.
While at the Ilion Police Department, Chabrier continued to fight with police. He also intentionally kicked a hole in the wall of the police station.
Chabrier is charged with felony driving while intoxicated due to a previous conviction for DWI within the last 10 years, refusal to submit a breath screening device, resisting arrest, second-degree assault and third-degree criminal mischief.
He was arraigned in Ilion Village Court and was remanded to Herkimer County Correctional Facility in lieu of $20,000 cash bail or $40,000 bail bond. He is scheduled to reappear in village court on June 16.
