The Little Falls Fire Department has started a food drive to benefit the Little Falls Food Pantry.
“It’s a brand new thing we’re doing,” said Scott Kinville, a firefighter with the department. “We decided it would be good to do something and give back to the community we serve.”
Kinville said the food drive started over the weekend and will continue until Oct. 31. Drop-off boxes can be found at the Little Falls Dollar General, Kinney Drugs, Big M and Carney’s Corners locations. Kinville noted the locations all have items that can be purchased for the food drive.
Kinville also said there is no real goal for the food drive, but rather the department just wants to help out. “Especially during the holiday season, we don’t want to see anyone going hungry,” he said. “We just want to collect as much as we can.”
Sue Tucker, coordinator for the Little Falls Food Pantry, said they are looking for all types of canned goods and food items to be donated to the pantry, including fruits and vegetables.
“We are really low again,” she said. “It seems to be wholesale prices are going up and we’re having to pay more money.”
Tucker said there also has been a slight increase in demand from the food pantry and volunteers are thankful to hear the fire department was interested in helping out.
“They approached us ... thank goodness!” she said. “We are looking really bad.”
Kinville said if the food drive is successful, the fire department may extend it through the rest of the holiday months.
