DOLGEVILLE, N.Y. —
Village police reported that an Oppenheim man is undergoing a mental health evaluation following an incident outside of his father’s house Monday morning, where police seized over 170 weapons.
Daniel Nellis, 39, of 174 Hoffman Road, was apprehended at his residence by the Fulton County Sheriff’s department about an hour or so after the incident.
Chief Richard Congdon said neighbors notified police of a man armed with weapons outside of 53 Dolge Ave. at around 6:30 a.m.
“He was acting as if he was on some type of drug,” said Congdon on Monday. He added that the man was also yelling a lot, specifically “They’re never going to take me!”
Congdon said they utilized the Dolgeville Central School District’s dialing system to alert people to stay away from the scene for a lock-in.
Congdon said police secured the area when they arrived. They found that Nellis had left residence by the time they arrived. Police gained entry into the home and found several loaded firearms. They seized a total of 120 long guns, 52 hand guns and a weapon concealed inside a cane.
Congdon said he’s never seen so many weapons seized in one incident.
“And I’ve been doing this for a long time,” he said.
Congdon said the investigation is ongoing, and that no charges have been filed yet as police were checking the legality of the weapons.
Congdon said neighbors believed Nellis to be on bath salts, but that could not be confirmed as of deadline. Nellis had previously been arrested in January 2011 for third-degree unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
A representative with the Fulton County Sheriff department was unavailable for comment on Monday.
