A fire broke out at 121 N. Main St. in Herkimer during the early hours of Saturday morning.

According to Herkimer Fire Department Acting Deputy, Allen Nasypany, the Herkimer Fire Department received the call from a person in the apartment building next door of the “old Vinny’s building” at 1:47 a.m. The fire department responded to the call with engines 115, 116, truck 140, as well as the Herkimer Police Department, and MOVAC, said Nasypany. The fire was located at the back exterior of the building. At 5 a.m. the fire was ruled out and the Herkimer Fire Department returned to service. The entire block of North Main Street was blocked off by caution tape.

Naspany said no injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is unknown. The fire is currently under investigation.

The same building caught on fire just a few weeks ago on April 2. Extensive water and fire damage was sustained to the attic and smoke damage was reported for the whole building, said Herkimer Deputy Fire Chief Mike Edwards.

The cause of the fire was ruled accidental due to the furnace being left on unattended. No injuries were reported at the fire. The space was being renovated to use as apartments for college students, said Edwards.
