On June 6, 1933, chemical plant owner Richard Hollingshead opened his concept to seat 1,200 theatergoers without a movie house. He invented the drive-in theater in Camden, N.J., room for 400 cars on nine acres. It only lasted three years, due to noise complaints from its huge loudspeakers.
Still, it set a genre, and it created an extra moneymaker: the movie snack bar.
