FRANKFORT, N.Y. —
Donnalyn Shuster, an art teacher at Frankfort-Schuyler Middle and Senior High School, has received national recognition for her work for Youth Art Month.
Shuster received the 2011 Youth Art Month Award of Merit from the Council of Art Education and the award for Outstanding Promotion. Awards were presented to honorees during the 2012 Convention of the National Art Education Association, held from March 1 to 4 in New York City.
Shuster said the merit award is for the work she has done with the state’s annual report for Youth Art Month. She said the report needs to be meticulously assembled to show how the state is progressing with the program.
“Within it are specific parameters, demographics. We’re measuring participation year-to-year, by region, by district, sometimes by county. We do a lot of data collection,” she said.
The state received this national recognition though its Youth Art Month Program is only in its third year. She said the group is in the process of setting up regional chairpersons and “developing a state network.”
Shuster said thanks belong with the state art teachers.
“[They] are very supportive,” she said.
One of the biggest events tied into Youth Art Month for the county is the Bassett-Healthcare art show, in Herkimer, which features the works of art students in schools throughout the county. Other events include the Cake-Off at Frankfort-Schuyler Middle School, the Legislative Art Show in Albany and the West Canada Valley Art Show.
Shuster has been a presenter for the National Art Education Association Conference from 2006 to 2012 and is also a representative to the Board of Trustees for Region 3 of NYSATA. She is also the publicity chairperson for the Youth Art Month Legislative Art Show.
Youth Art Month started three years ago in New York State, but is a program that has been in place since 1961. The purpose of the program, according to its website, is “to emphasize the value of art education for all children and to encourage support for quality school art programs.”
