Ground has broken for construction on a new community center at the German Flatts Town Park.
Town Supervisor Frank Spatto said during a telephone interview on Wednesday construction workers are currently working on the foundation for the new building. “It’s mostly for a place to have our events,” said Spatto, who is also a member of the Friends of the Town Park of German Flatts.
Currently there is a gazebo on the grounds and a concessions stand.
Construction started over the past week. Spatto said the structure is going to have a 30 foot by 30 foot kitchen and a 40 foot by 80 foot hall that will be able to hold a couple hundred people.
The work is being done through a $150,000 grant from the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation’s Environmental Protection Fund. According to its website, the municipal grant program provides “matching grants for the acquisition, planning, development, and improvement of parks, historic properties listed on the National or State Registers of Historic Places and heritage areas identified in approved plans for statutorily designated Heritage Areas.” Funds are available to municipalities or not-for-profits with an ownership interest. The maximum award is $500,000.
Spatto said the work is being done through the help of volunteers, donations and grants.
The Friends of the Town Park of German Flatts conducts several events at the park throughout the year, including the annual Living History event which will take place Sept. 28, 29 and 30. The Friends also conduct its annual Cow Plop Bingo event, Polish Fest and Christmas in the Park at the park.
