Herkimer Now and the Village of Herkimer held the first-ever Superhero Sprint on Saturday afternoon.

Children and adults dressed as their favorite superheroes and sprinted down North Main Street to rescue a citizen captured and held hostage by evil villains.

Herkimer Now Community Outreach Committee member Laura Powers said the event was a way to show families that Main Street is a friendly and safe place to be.

“We want to make this an annual event and get even more people involved as the years go on, for the first sprint we really had a better turnout than expected,” said Powers.

The event was also a way to acknowledge the services of local heroes. Before the sprint began Herkimer Now Committee Member and Event Coordinator Stefanie Noble gave a shout out to all the local superheroes that make the village of Herkimer an enjoyable and safe place to live.

“Rather than focusing on only fantasy we wanted to incorporate the real heroes of our community which include business owners, the police department, the fire department and EMTs,” Noble added.
