The Calling All Fashionistas fashion show took place in the Herkimer County Community College cafeteria on Thursday afternoon. Girls from ages 8 to 11 walked the runway to show what they had created during their time spent at the fashion themed Community Education camp sponsored by Herkimer County Community College and Herkimer BOCES.

The camp ran from Monday to Thursday June 25-28, from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. each day

This year 14 girls got a taste of the first youth community education fashion camp.

One of the program’s supervisors and a previous HCCC Fashion Merchandising student, Alison Deutschman, said the main goal of the program was for the girls to focus on fashion in a positive way.

“We wanted the girls to bring out their natural beauty and feel comfortable in their own skin,” said Deutschman. To better understand natural beauty, the girls watched a Dove film about how the image of true beauty has become distorted by the media.

Technical Assistant of Program Development Nicole Maziarz coordinates the community education programs.

“Throughout the camp the girls completed several creative fashion projects which included duct tape headbands, bedazzling, homemade purses, tie dye shirts, and an ‘about me’ collage that represented them.” said Maziarz.

Director of Public Relations, Rebecca Ruffing said the program went well and could lead to another fashion camp in the near future.

“Due to the success of the program we’re looking into offering a second session later in the summer,” Ruffing said, adding that the college is also expanding its Youth Summer Community Education Programs that cover a variety of interests.
