HERKIMER, N.Y. —
Campers flocked to area campgrounds over the weekend to celebrate the unofficial end of summer.
“It’s one last hurrah for the kids before school starts,” said Ike Tomaszewski, of Clifton Park in Saratoga County, on Monday when Labor Day is observed. He played football with his young sons Jakub and Mateusz before getting ready to leave.
Tomaszewski joined his parents at the campground on Saturday and spent the time doing some enjoyable activities.
“[We spent] time around the campfire, swimming in the river and catching crayfish,” he said, with Mateusz noting he caught five crayfish during their visit.
Irene Tomaszewski, of Whitesboro, the elder Tomaszewski’s mother, said she and her husband had visited the campgrounds before and decided to visit again this year.
“We love it,” she said. “There’s the playground for the children, the swimming pool, the fitness trail, you can spend time on the river and catch fish. You can also stick kielbasa over the fire and marshmallows, too. You can also bike ride. It’s a beautiful place. We will be back next year.”
Many Americans got to embrace the three-day weekend which allowed for some extra recreation time with friends and family. Besides camping, people were able to enjoy bicycling, boating, and walking throughout trails and waterways in Herkimer County on Monday.
Juniper Devecis, who lives in the Boston-area, visited the Canalway Trail in German Flatts on Monday with her family who spent their time their bicycling.
“We’re visiting my parents. They come here every weekend,” said Devecis. She said they also visited the Herkimer Diamond Mines during their Labor Day visit.
Elizabeth Marin, of Toronto, Ontario, stopped at the Little Falls Canal Harbor and Rotary Park on Monday to shower. She has been traveling with her husband Chris Hansen on their boat Groovin’ from Toronto to Florida.
“It’s a nice place. It’s a nice dock,” she said about the harbor. She said they planned to stay in the city for a few days after several days of intense traveling.
Dennis Gleason, of East Durham in Greene County, summed up his visit to Herkimer Diamond KOA in one word: “relaxation.”
Gleason said it’s the second time they had visited the Herkimer Diamond KOA this year — their fifth camping trip for the year — and said it’s the West Canada Creek that keeps bringing them back to visit the area.
“It’s getting away from the office and hanging out with friends and family,” he said on Monday while hanging out at his campsite. “It’s families getting together and the kids get to play.”
